Theme for Goldsmith Festival 2020

This years theme has just been announced:

2020 THEME

With 2020 being the 250th anniversary of the publishing of Goldsmith’s great poem, “The Deserted Village” in 1770, it is appropriate that this years festival will centre on this poetic masterpiece and it’s themes. With Irish Agriculture, particularly the Beef Industry, coming under increasing pressure on both the economic and climate fronts, this years theme seeks to explore the future for the Irish beef and indeed wider food industry.

Our Theme:

“The Deserted Village”

As ‘Rural virtues leave the land’

What now for Irish Agriculture and it’s ‘Bold Peasantry’

Very Successful Opening Night

The Festival began last night in Abbeyshrule with a wonderful night’s entertainment.   After a beautiful and interesting Official opening Talk by Donal Mac an Bheatha we were then treated to a most stimulating and thought-provoking lecture by Dr. Fergus O’Ferrall.  The night was rounded off by a fantastic Traditional Session by Tony Dunne, Jim Mulkerrin and friends.

School’s Poetry Competition

Due to the very large volume of entries for the Schools Poetry competition, a great deal of shortlisting has been taking place. Winners and highly commended are being contacted individually. Thank you for your patience. Many thanks to the principals staff and of course students and parents for the wonderful work.
Winners and highly commended are as always invited to read under the trees at Pallas on Sunday.
